Lynne Baer is ...

an infovore

I'm always reading. Not just novels, but blogs and journals, fed to me by the power of RSS. I keep track of interesting, thoughtful posts by bookmarking them to my delicious, where I can share them with my friends. My interest in information organization and knowledge management has led me to apply to grad school in information science programs for Fall 2010; wish me luck!

a photographer and videographer

I developed an interest in photography when digital cameras became more readily available, saving me hundreds of dollars in failed film experiments with no immediate feedback. :) Over time, I found that I enjoyed shooting landscapes and macros, but occasionally, I would get lucky with a great candid. In 2009, one of my photos was featured on the official Flickr blog; subsequently, I was invited to become a contributor to Getty Images, one of the largest stock photography websites in the world. I also contributed video footage to the Aids Action Committee's documenting of their annual benefit, Taste of the South End; we got to use Flip cams, and now I want my own!

a social media evangelist

Ever since I got an iPhone, I have my social networks in my pocket wherever I go. I keep a social-media focused Twitter, linking to articles of interest and sharing them with like-minded fellow geeks. Social networking and social media long predated Twitter, though; I've kept a personal blog since 2000, first using Blogger, then Greymatter, then Movable Type, but I finally settled in at LiveJournal because it enabled better social ties than the standalone blog services offered at the time. More recently, I've moved to Dreamwidth, a female-friendly Open Source fork of the LiveJournal code, and I'm really excited that I can make substantial contributions to the Dreamwidth project.

a babydev

As a distraction from wedding planning, I began learning how to program last year. So far, I've contributed two patches to the open-source journaling platform Dreamwidth, and am learning to manipulate Perl. I'd also like to put a front end on the MySQL database I created for an imaginary local, seasonal food delivery service, though I suspect that will be a job better done in PHP.

a geek for hire

I speak HTML, CSS, and SQL. I can manipulate JavaScript and PHP as needed. I make magic happen with Photoshop. I live and breathe social networking. I understand how to use all this shiny tech to communicate effectively with target audiences, and I can translate to and from geekspeak easily. If you've got an opening in your organization for someone with these skills, drop me a line.

a cyclist

I got back on a bike two summers ago, and you will often see me riding all around Camberville. I look forward to Hub on Wheels every year, where I get to ride down Storrow Drive on my bike. Coolest thing ever!

a locavore and a foodie

I frequent just about all of the Camberville farmers' markets when they're in season; I'm the woman with the shiny blue bike and purple floral panniers overloaded with local fruits, veggies, and other artisanal goods. I can talk about chocolate and making ethical food choices for hours. I keep a food blog, Camberville Cuisine, focusing on local food.

a bibliophile

I have a stack of books on my nightstand right now towering over the height of the bedside lamp. I'm trying to keep better track of what I read this year with Goodreads, and it's nice to be able to keep track of what my friends are reading and recommending; you can find me there as Lynne Baer.

an occasional knitter

I first learned to knit from my grandmother when I was eight. I pick up my needles every so often; most recently, to make this hat. I spend a fair amount of time on Ravelry as well, bookmarking patterns and sharing inspiration with other crafty friends. (You can find me there as ursamajor, though that link won't work unless you're a Ravelry member.)

a musician

I sang in various choirs and a cappella groups for 25 years, most recently with Chorus pro Musica, but I'm mostly retired now. My sister-in-law has been encouraging me to take up the guitar; maybe that's what I'll do this spring before I lose all my free time to grad school in the fall ...

a hibernating fangirl

When I first got on the Internet back in the mid-nineties, I was a big fan of The X-Files. The series ended badly, but I made great friends chatting with other fans online, and the archives of my old fansite are still there. Ah, relics.

a newlywed!

I got married last year - twice! Once in Korea, in front of my husband's extended family, and once in California, with West Coast friends and family. I made a wedding website, of course.
